Institute for Plastination

The Institute for Plastination was founded in Heidelberg in 1993 by Dr Gunther von Hagens. The Institute’s mission is to preserve human bodies and body parts and make them accessible to medical students and staff for training purposes as well as to educate the public about general health and medical issues. The “Body Worlds” exhibitions staged by the Institute are world-famous.

The IfP wanted to network its three administrative and warehouse sites in Heidelberg so that they appeared to be one unit. It also wanted each member of staff to be able to be contacted via a single telephone number – on both their fixed lines and their DECT phones. At the same time, the Institute wished to cut its telephony costs significantly as a result of this integration. The Guben works in Brandenburg in north-east Germany are also going to be included in the organisation’s ICT infrastructure in future. What’s more, IfP is considering whether to integrate its mobile phones by means of fixed-mobile convergence (FMC). The requirements are particularly high regarding the sturdiness of the telephony equipment used. This is especially the case for the two telephone systems that have to be transported along with the mobile “Body Worlds” exhibitions.

The three IntelliGate systems located in Heidelberg were networked transparently by Aastra and RD Communication GmbH using an Aastra IntelliGate Network (AIN). The integration of the OpenCom 1010 system installed in Guben is being prepared via QSIG. The Institute largely meets the demanding requirements concerning the sturdiness of the cordless telephones used in parts of its warehouse by employing Office 135 DECT phones. Two Aastra IntelliGate 300 systems turned out to be the perfect solution for the touring exhibitions.

"Aastra and our systems integrator RD Communication have worked for us for many years and been active and highly reliable ICT partners. Both companies support us perfectly together – they even accompany our ‘Body Worlds’ exhibitions around the globe."
