Salt River Fields

Owned and operated by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC), Salt River Fields is the new Spring Training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies baseball franchises. Salt River Fields is the first Major League Baseball Spring Training facility built on Native American land. The $100 million complex was opened in February 2011 and has completed its first Spring Training season this year. The complex consists of separate training facilities and clubhouses accommodating each team as well as an 11,000-seat central stadium, 12 practice fields, and a variety of concessions areas.

Much more than just a Spring Training facility, Salt River Fields will be active 365 days a year and will host numerous community activities including youth camps, community events, festivals, retreats and facility rentals for conferences, parties and other large gatherings.

In choosing a telecommunications solution for the facility, SRPMIC knew they needed a system that was highly flexible and scalable. In essence, they needed to be able to support three independent organi zations under one roof: the Salt River Fields administrative offices, the Arizona Diamondbacks staff and coaches, and the Colorado Rockies staff and coaches. However, the two teams’ offices would only reside at Salt River Fields during the Spring Training season, after which they would return to their respective headquarters while the Salt River Fields staff reside there permanently, supporting ticket sales and operations for other events throughout the year. Each of the organizations also had specific requirements based on their business practices, so the system needed to be user-friendly and easily administered.

SRPMIC chose BusinessFlex Hosted iPBX from Saddleback Communications to support the entire complex. BusinessFlex iPBX is a hosted, fully managed voice and data solution which integrates local telephone service, IP business phones and high speed Internet, available on a per seat subscription. BusinessFlex iPBX is a full-featured solution suitable for even large enterprises, but without the overhead incurred in owning a traditional phone solution on premise.

""We’ve been impressed with the flexibility of the system. IP phones that were initially installed in our construction trailer were seamlessly moved to the permanent offices and we quickly added phones in a temporary sales office to support retail ticket sales during the holiday season." "
Dave Dunne - General Manager, Salt River Fields

The hosted solution provides the needed multi-tenancy "out of the box" and provides flexibility for adding and reducing users throughout the year. The included CommPortal is an easy-to-use web-based configuration tool that allows each user to administer his own voice mail, call routing options, etc. Also included with the solution are Aastra SIP phones; Salt River Fields has approximately 220 phones, ranging from the Aastra 6731i for general business use to full-featured Aastra 6757i models, and color touch-screen Aastra 6739i executive phones.

Saddleback Communications provides the BusinessFlex solution as a turnkey service. They own and provide maintenance for all the phones and host the service in their own secure, fully redundant Central Office. "Saddleback has been great to work with," said Dave Dunne, General Manager, Salt River Fields. "Working around tight construction schedules and the varying requirements of three organizations, they had the system installed and ready for the opening of Spring Training. We have been very pleased with the reliability and flexibility of the solution."
