Berliner Tafel

Founded as a nonprofit organisation in Berlin, Berliner Tafel e.V. was the first food-rescue undertaking of its kind in Germany. Since 1993, members and volunteers have been recovering good food that is still edible, but that can no longer be sold on the market, and distributing it to more than 300 charities and welfare organisations in Germany’s capital city. This way, they regularly help more than 250,000 people in need.

Efficient communication is an essential asset for Berliner Tafel as it needs to react quickly to the offers made by food resellers and stores, caterers and warehouses. By principal, Berliner Tafel is an absolutely professional logistic company and has to deal with all aspects of incoming and outgoing wares, making an investment in the optimisation of logistics necessary.

Aastra improved Berliner Tafel’s communication infrastructure by installing the latest technology – the professional Aastra 800 software-based PBX using a PC LAN. The solution included DECToverIP® base stations and industrial DECT portable handsets for employees working in the warehouse and loading area. The organisation’s database of companies and distributing organisations was imported into the Aastra 800’s internal phonebook. This helps staff work more effectively and results in more personalized and competent communication, thanks to the name of donators being displayed whenever they call.
